Tian Shan Trek: Trek in the Chinese Tian Shan with horses and experience Kazak culture

Tian Shan Treks In the Tian Shan Mountains at Heaven Lake with Kazak yurts and horses

Below is a sample 5-day trek in the Tian Shan Mountains east of Urumqi. A traverse of the Tian Shan to the east of Urumqi, the autonomous region capital, may be completed in 5-6 days. In the western Tian Shan within China the range widens providing more options for shorter or longer treks. Typically, the north slope of the Tian Shan is forested and the southern slope, being drier, is not. Kazaks live in the Tian Shan and in the summer they move into the mountains to summer pastures with their sheep, goats, horses, yaks and camels.

5-day trek

Day 01: Drive from Urumqi to the meeting point with horsemen, trek 5 hours or so, camp. (Trekking time can be adjusted per however fast or slow you wish to hike).

Day 02: Trek to near crest of Tian Shan near Bodga Feng, camp.

Day 03: Short trekking day over crest of Tian Shan near Bogda.

Day 04: Rest day or day trek from camp to explore area around Bogda.

Day 05: Trek to Tian Chi (Heaven Lake), meet vehicle, drive to Urumqi.
